The Macroom History Group has announced details of several events it will be hosting in the coming months.

The primary aim of the group is the preservation and promotion of local history, while they also organise events with guest speakers on a variety of topics, which are generally held in the Castle Hotel in Macroom.

On Tuesday, January 14, there will be a discussion on climate history and the future, with guest speaker on the night Professor Hannah Daly of University College Cork (UCC).

Ms Daly, a professor in sustainable energy at UCC, communicates widely on the topic of climate action in Ireland, including writing a monthly column, ‘At A Time Of Climate Crisis’, for the Irish Times.

She also has previously worked at the International Energy Agency (IEA), leading the topic of energy development for the World Energy Outlook (WEO), and at the UCL Energy Institute, developing the UK TIMES Model (UKTM).

On Tuesday, February 11, there will be an event to mark the 100th anniversary of Macroom Golf Club (1925-2025), with Con Kelleher, Margaret Buckley, and Jim Morrison among those chairing the discussion.

On Tuesday, March 11, Dan Cronin will speak on ‘My Sporting Memorabilia’. Mr Cronin has a vast collection of GAA, soccer, hurling, rugby, and bowling material collected and will speak about them on the night.

In April, the Macroom History Group will hold a schools history exhibition. Local junior cert students will do a class-based assessment, with the group providing a platform for the students to present their work.

The Macroom History Group also run Macroom history walks, which provide a walking tour, visiting some of the historical landmarks around the town.
