The public can now have their say on plans to improve the road network and rejuvenate the Cork Docklands area.
Among the aims of the Cork Docklands to City Centre Road Network Improvement Scheme is to enhance public amenities in the area and to improve the connectivity of the South Docklands with the city centre across all methods of transport.
There is an emphasis being placed on walking, cycling and public transport and improving road safety in the area.
Speaking to The Echo, the Lord Mayor of Cork City Dan Boyle said: “We would like people to make themselves aware of a project that we have been developing for a number of years, that is part of an overall project network to have more cycleways across the city and public transport.
“Particularly for the people we hope will be living in the Docklands area, that they have those very options and encouraging a more sustainable approach to transport across the city.”
Cork city Labour Party councillor Peter Horgan said: “This is a welcome and long overdue project for the area, an area that will show a vote of confidence in the Docklands project as a new mini city within Cork city.
“I would encourage all residents in the area and those with interest in the area to engage with the consultation and go into the granularity so that it delivers for everyone.”
Measures proposed in the scheme include: public realm improvements with footpaths to be widened and repaved; improved public lighting to be provided, and the installation of new feature lighting; the introduction of a city centre-bound contra-flow bus lane on Victoria Road (north) and Albert Quay and an outbound bus lane on Albert Quay East & Victoria Road (north); the introduction of a two-way cycle track on Albert Quay and Victoria Road (north); and the replacement of the Victoria Road/ Centre Park Road Roundabout with a sustainable transport focused traffic signal-controlled junction.
Also proposed in the scheme is the improvement and reconfiguration of Monahan Road/Victoria Road junction and the Old Blackrock Road/Victoria Road junction; the introduction of a new residential access link between Marina Terrace and Rosefield Terrace; and Kennedy Quay vehicular access from Albert Quay to be restricted with the primary vehicular access to Kennedy Quay to be from Marina Walk.
Pedestrian and cycle crossing facilities will be provided at all junctions for the safety of vulnerable road users, and all bus stops will be upgraded.
The public consultation runs until March 10, 2025 , with residents and people invested in the rejuvenation of the Docklands urged to engage with the new draft plans.
