In the heyday of the showband era, the 1960s and 70s, Dickie Rock packed out Cork venues such as the Arcadia on Cork’s Lower Glanmire Road, the Majestic in Mallow, the Ballroom in Macroom, the Red Barn in Youghal, the Majorca in Crosshaven and the Lilac in Enniskean.

The death of Irish music legend Dickie Rock has been been announced.

The Dublin singer, aged 88, was a leading light of the Irish showband scene since the 1960s and earned fame as the front man of the Miami Showband and later as a solo performer. 

He finished fourth in the 1966 Eurovision Song Contest, singing his song, Come Back To Stay, and only retired from performing in 2021 at the age of 84.

In the heyday of the showband era, the 1960s and 70s, Dickie Rock packed out Cork venues such as the Arcadia on Cork’s Lower Glanmire Road, the Majestic in Mallow, the Ballroom in Macroom, the Red Barn in Youghal, the Majorca in Crosshaven and the Lilac in Enniskean.

Mr Rock’s family confirmed his death in a statement issued on Friday evening. “The children of Dickie Rock are saddened to confirm that he passed away peacefully today, 6 December 2024.

“His children, Jason, John, Richard, Sarah Jane and Peter will miss him very much.

“Dickie lost his beloved Judy in 2022 and they are now together again, and that is of some comfort to the family.”
