Cork’s industrial docklands have been described as a “huge opportunity to bring new life to the city, with a mix of modern living options and office spaces giving rise to a whole new district”.

However, Cork Chamber president Rob Horgan told the organisation’s annual Dublin dinner last night that the impact of “infrastructure inefficiencies on this ambition” could not be underestimated.

“Cork is uniquely positioned to lead in urban evolution, as a model city forging a path for others to follow,” said Mr Horgan.

“Our next government needs to innovate on how we reinvigorate Ireland’s urban centres through the creation of what we call ‘urban evolution deals’ to leverage local strengths and to drive sustainable development.

“Urban evolution needs to be taken on at ministerial level, if we are to make city-centre living a reality. Urban evolution isn’t just about infrastructure; it’s about making cities work for the people who live in them.”

During his address, Mr Horgan also called for the “easing of the regulatory burden” on the business sector, as well seeking the “provision of supports needed”.

“A thriving SME sector is also the bedrock for our FDI companies, which we place great value in,” he said.

The keynote speaker at the event — attended by more than 600 leaders from Ireland’s business, political, and diplomatic sectors — was former Tánaiste Simon Coveney, who warned of “significant challenges and opportunities” in an “evolving geopolitical landscape”.

“From shifts in US administration to economic and political pressures, these changes will test our resilience and demand forward-thinking strategies to safeguard Ireland’s interests and global standing,” he said.

Frank O’Keeffe, the managing partner of event sponsor EY Ireland, said both Cork and Dublin play a “vital role” in “driving Ireland’s economic success”.

“At EY, we are committed to helping businesses adapt to a rapidly evolving landscape, empowering them to embrace sustainability, digital transformation, and innovative talent strategies among other key areas.”

At last night’s event, Jim Barry, managing director of the Barry Group, was recognised with the award for ‘outstanding contribution to business’ for the transformation under his leadership of a local family-run operation into one of Ireland’s leading wholesale distributors.

The citation mentioned how his pioneering strategies, including the launch of Quik Pick, alongside key acquisitions and innovative expansion, have positioned Barry Group as a cornerstone of the Irish grocery trade.

According to Mr Horgan, Jim Barry was a “true trailblazer” and exemplified the values and vision that fuel sustainable business growth. “This is a shining example of the importance of ensuring the right environment for our ambitious SMEs to invest, grow and scale,” he said. Accepting the award, Mr Barry said while it was a personal achievement, the award was a “great recognition of the Barry Group and family business alike”.
