Gardaí investigating multiple phone thefts over jazz weekend

Cork saw a heightened Garda presence in the city centre during the October bank holiday weekend, which saw thousands attend jazz events.

Gardai are investigating a string of phone thefts from busy venues over the jazz weekend, appealing to the public to come forward with information.

They have advised on the importance of personal vigilance with regard to possessions such as phones when out and about.

More than 100 different events brought over 100,000 people to Cork city over the weekend, as the annual Guinness Cork Jazz Festival delivered a €45million boost to the city in what publicans said was the busiest jazz weekend they’d ever seen.

The crowds of tourists and locals alike in town during the evenings led to an increased Garda presence, but despite this, several bars and music venues reported multiple phone thefts.

A garda spokesperson told The Echo: “As part of this year’s Guinness Jazz Festival, Cork saw a heightened garda presence throughout the bustling areas of McCurtain Street and the city centre.

“This proactive approach was aimed at ensuring the safety and enjoyment of festival-goers as they attended a wide range of musical events and gatherings.

“The increased garda visibility contributed to a secure environment, allowing the thousands of attendees to enjoy the weekend’s events with peace of mind.

“However, despite these efforts, gardaí are seeking assistance from the public following several incidents of mobile phone theft in the city’s licensed premises over the weekend.”

The spokesperson explained, “Gardaí believe that the phones were targeted in crowded venues, underscoring the importance of personal vigilance in public spaces.”

Gardaí are now encouraging anyone with information related to these incidents to contact Anglesea Street Garda Station on 021 4522 000.

In addition, they are reminding the public to take extra care with personal belongings, especially mobile phones in handbags or pockets, when in crowded areas.
