Cork City Ballet's 'The Sleeping Beauty' at the Cork Opera House.

Cork City Ballet is to bring The Sleeping Beauty to Cork Opera House this November for four shows only.

In association with Cork Opera House, Cork City Council, RedFM and Benchmark International, Cork City Ballet’s performance of Tchaikovsky’s masterpiece will run from Thursday, November 7 to Saturday, November 9.

Directed by Cork City Ballet’s artistic director Alan Foley, and choreographed by the group’s chief choreographer Yury Demakov, this year’s annual ballet show reawakens the magic of the classic fairy-tale in an enchanted world of castles and curses, forests, and fairies.

The performance, which will mark 31 years of Cork City Ballet, tells of Princess Aurora, who lived in a castle where fairies bestowed her with gifts of joy, wit, generosity, temperament, purity and beauty.

However, the wicked Fairy Carabosse put a curse on Aurora, to prick her finger and die on her 16th birthday, before a fairy cast a spell so that instead of dying when she pricked her finger, she would instead be put to sleep for a hundred years, only to be awoken by the kiss of a prince.

The leading role of Princess Aurora will be danced by prima ballerina Katerina Petrova, and her prince will be her husband Tsetso Ivanov, both stars with the Sofia State Ballet in Georgia.

The two leads will be joined by soloists and a full corps de ballet from Cork City Ballet.

“I am delighted that The Sleeping Beauty, with its beautiful score, magnificent choreography and stunning sets and costumes is in the repertoire for November 2024," Mr Foley said.

“It is the perfect family favourite.”

The Sleeping Beauty opens at the Cork Opera House on Thursday, November 7 and runs until Saturday, November 9 with shows at 8pm each night and a matinee on Saturday at 2.30pm.

Under 16’s must be accompanied by and seated next to a parent or guardian aged over 18.

Tickets cost between €27 and €45 and can be booked at www.corkoperahouse.ie or by calling 0214270022.
