'Concerning rise' in rat related call-outs in Cork, says pest control provider 

A pest control provider is reporting a "concerning increase" in rat-related callouts in the Cork region this year. 

Rentokil says it has recorded a 100% increase in rat callouts in September 2024 compared to the same period last year.

It is further advising that this significant surge in rat activity is expected to increase with the transition into the colder winter period as rats seek warmth and shelter as the temperatures drop, often finding refuge in homes, businesses, and other buildings.

Colm Moore, Area Technical Manager for Rentokil said: "Rentokil is urging both business and homeowners owners in Cork to stay alert to the increased presence of rats, as we have seen a significant rise in callouts across the region. 

"It’s essential to recognise the signs of a rat infestation and take proactive steps to prevent them. 

"With colder weather driving rodents indoors, it’s vital to implement effective rodent-proofing measures.

Rentokil advised that recognising the signs of rat activity, such as droppings and scratching noises, is vital for early detection and prevention.
