Cork-based cancer patient encourages public to get behind 'Big Pink Breakfast' campaign

Nollaig Feehan, 45, is a breast cancer patient form Mallow who is calling on the people of Cork to host a Big Pink Breakfast fundraiser this month.

A Cork-based cancer patient is encouraging people to host a ‘Big Pink Breakfast’ in aid of research this month.

Nollaig Feehan, who has breast cancer, is supporting the Irish Cancer Society’s ‘Breast Cancer Awareness Campaign’ and is calling on the people of Cork to host a fundraiser for vital support services and research projects.

A Big Pink Breakfast can be hosted in a participant’s home, workplace, community or college, and all funds will be put towards support services and research, such as free counselling, transport to treatment, and night nursing.

Ms Feehan, 45, was diagnosed with grade-two, triple-negative breast cancer after she discovered a lump last April.

The mother-of-one’s treatment plan includes two 12-week rounds of chemotherapy and, after that, surgery options will be considered, depending on genetic testing and how large the tumour is after treatment.

Ms Feehan is a passionate advocate for lowering the breast-cancer screening age and is calling on women to regularly self-check their breasts for any signs or symptoms.

Speaking on the campaign, Ms Feehan said: “I would encourage everyone to please get behind the Big Pink Breakfast campaign, because a huge amount of the funding for the Irish Cancer Society’s breast-cancer support services and breast-cancer research projects comes from donations made by the public.

“If you are at all able, please support this important cause.”

Cancer nurse with the Irish Cancer Society Carol Spillane said: “Self-examination is so important for women of all ages, even those who are eligible for screening, as this only takes place every two years.

“Pick a day and try to do it as consistently as you can on a monthly basis.

“It’s really important that we are breast aware and know what is normal for us: If you notice any of the signs or symptoms of breast cancer and the change persists, please go to see your GP as soon as possible.

“Women can sometimes feel embarrassed or uncomfortable attending their GP with breast issues, but this examination could save your life.

“Your GP will perform a routine examination of your breast and, if appropriate, refer you for further assessment.”
