News of Oasis’s long-hoped for reunion has prompted feelings of nostalgia among people in Cork and calls for the iconic band to pay a visit to Leeside.
The Britpop band, who split nearly 15 years ago and released their chart-topping album
around three decades ago, today confirmed a new tour with a series of dates which will kick off at Cardiff’s Principality Stadium. The UK and Ireland tour will also visit Manchester’s Heaton Park, London’s Wembley Stadium, Edinburgh’s Murrayfield Stadium and Dublin’s Croke Park throughout July and August next year.
While it is currently stated that these dates will be the band’s exclusive European appearances, on Leeside hopes abound for a Cork appearance.
“It would be great if Páirc Uí Chaoimh was considered at some point,” Cork Business Association (CBA) president Aaron Mansworth said.
“For Dublin to get two [gigs] it’s a start but we’d love to see them down south as well.”
Asked if he would describe himself as an Oasis fan, Mr Mansworth, who is the managing director of Trigon Hotels, said: “Oh I would. Back in the heyday it was Blur or Oasis and I definitely came down on the Oasis side, particularly with their Irish connection!”
Meanwhile, the Lord Mayor of Cork councillor Dan Boyle described the 1996 Páirc Uí Chaoimh Oasis concert as “one of the most successful” ever to be held in Cork, adding:
Labour councillor John Maher said news of the band’s reunion brought back memories of being introduced to Oasis’s music when he was a teen.
“It brought me back to first year in Mayfield Community School with my introduction to Oasis, so I was a small bit nostalgic this morning when the news broke,” he told
.“From a Cork perspective, if they’re here [in Ireland] for two gigs, then you know what make it four or make it six and make sure that Cork is included in those other dates!
“I think that Cork is well able to look after Liam and Noel!
“It’s really good news that an iconic band are coming back and they’re coming to Ireland... if there’s an opportunity now to expand that tour then it would be fantastic if it would come to Leeside – no better people to look after them and support them.”
Similarly, Fine Gael councillor Damian Boylan said he would be thrilled to see the Manchester musicians return to Cork.
“I’d absolutely love it and I think we deserve it and I think Páirc Uí Chaoimh with Oasis would be just outstanding,” he said.
Tickets for the Oasis gigs in Dublin go on sale at 8am on Saturday, with tickets for UK gigs on sale at 9am.
