Met Éireann has issued an overnight yellow wind warning for all of Munster, with most of the country on standby for bad weather.

The national forecaster has warned of "unseasonably strong" overnight winds in the Munster counties, as well as in Wexford, Wicklow, Carlow, Kilkenny, Laois, Kildare and Dublin.

The status yellow wind warning will come into effect from midnight tonight and remain in place until 6am tomorrow.

Meanwhile, a status yellow rain warning has been issued for Clare, Galway, Roscommon, Longford, Louth, Meath, Offaly and Westmeath, coming into effect from 10pm tonight until 4am tomorrow.

Met Éireann has warned of widespread rain early tonight, with some heavy falls leading to spot flooding in places.

The rain will gradually clear north-eastwards later, and the night will turn very windy for time, especially in southern areas.

The forecaster warns that strong to gale force southerly winds will lead to wave overtopping in coastal parts of the southwest around high tide, with fallen trees and power outages possible.

Winds will gradually veer west to north-westerly and ease somewhat later in the night, with lowest temperatures of 9 to 12 degrees.

Separately, a status yellow marine gale warning from Carlingford Lough to Hook Head to Loop Head and on the Irish Sea South will come into effect from 11pm tonight until 9am tomorrow.

Met Éireann says southwest or cyclonic variable winds in affected areas will reach "gale force 8 or 9 at times".

Friday will be a bright day with sunny spells and scattered showers.

Looking ahead, the forecaster says Saturday will be a bright and breezy day with sunshine and showers, some heavy, and highest temperatures of 14 to 17 degrees.

It should be largely dry on Saturday night with clear spells, with just a few showers in the west and northwest. Lowest temperatures of 8 to 11 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds.

Sunday will be dry with some sunshine in the east at first, however, cloudier conditions in the west with outbreaks of rain and drizzle will gradually spread eastwards as the day goes on, with the weather becoming drier and brighter again from the west later in the day.

Highest temperatures of 15 to 18 degrees in mostly moderate south to southwest breezes.

It’ll be largely dry on Sunday night with clear spells, and just a few showers near Atlantic coasts. Cloud amounts will increase overnight.

Lowest temperatures on Sunday of 11 to 14 degrees in light to moderate southwest winds.
