Nano Nagle Place will host a series of events across the course of Heritage Week, commencing with free entry to its museum on Saturday.

One of Cork’s best-loved spaces, recognised internationally as one of Ireland’s top tourist attractions, has announced a programme of events to mark Heritage Week.

Nano Nagle Place, which has been listed as the winner of the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award for 2024, has a week-long series of events celebrating culture and history in the heart of the city.

Museum

The week begins at midday on August 17, with free entry to the Nano Nagle museum, where the South Presentation Congregational Archives will be showcasing objects of importance from the life of the founder of the Presentation Sisters.

From 11am to 1pm on August 18 and August 25, heritage specialist Shazia Waheed will give a workshop on native plants and animals.

At 2pm on August 21, genealogist David Ryan will give a lecture centred around the South Presentation Convent burial ground.

From 2pm to 4pm on August 24, visitors will have an opportunity to craft their own mini-museum inside a shoebox, in a creative and educational chance to explore museum curation.

At 11am on August 24, Veronica Stuart will explore the intricate artistry and rich history of Youghal Lace, sharing stories and insights into this Irish craft and its cultural significance.

From 2pm to 4pm on August 25, UCC lecturer and beekeeper Shane Lehane will give a lecture on the connection between bee’s honey, wax, and the saints in early Ireland.

Award

In addition to marking Heritage Week, Nano Nagle Place is also celebrating receiving the Tripadvisor Travellers’ Choice Award 2024, an accolade that highlights exceptional visitor reviews and ratings, and places the Cork heritage space among the top 10% of attractions globally. The award celebrates businesses that consistently receive outstanding reviews.

Nano Nagle Place has achieved this status due to its more than 500 five-star reviews, highlighting its appeal as a must-visit destination in Cork City. The site is now open seven days a week.

Tripadvisor’s awards honour travellers’ favourite destinations, hotels, restaurants, things to do, and more, based on reviews from travellers around the world shared on Tripadvisor.

So-called best of the best award winners are among the top 10% of listings on Tripadvisor, distinguishing them as travellers’ favourites for 2024.

Susannah Ahern, who is programme, heritage and education manager of Nano Nagle Place, said: “The five-star reviews we receive are nothing short of a testament to the dedication of our incredible team who work hard to ensure our unique heritage site,” Ms Ahern said.
