The Thomas Morrissey memorial tournament, which took place in Ringmahon Park on Sunday, raised €3,000 for a Mahon charity and paid tribute to a young man described as a “friend to all”.

Thomas Morrissey passed away suddenly in July 2012, and his club, Ringmahon Rangers, has honoured his memory every year since by hosting a memorial tournament in his name.

Twelve years on, the tournament is still going strong, as evidenced by the turnout on Sunday.

The event saw teams from Ringmahon and neighbouring sides face off in a friendly atmosphere. It also featured a cake sale, facepainting and DJ, as well as a raffle afterwards in the Red Cove Inn, with all money raised going to the Rainbow Club.

Robert O’Leary, Thomas’ brother-in-law, who helped organise the event, told The Echo that it was a fantastic day despite the weather.

“It was a fantastic day for both adults and kids with a cake sale and facepainting and 70 plus players taking part over the four games,” he said.

“We had a big crowd all day despite the weather, including Karen and Jon from the Rainbow Club.

“We held a raffle and awards in the Red Cove Inn after the tournament where Ringmahon A were presented with the shield and the awards of player of the tournament — Jordan Delurey; goal of the tournament — Ritchie St Leger; and biggest moan of the tournament — Alan O’Callaghan, were also presented followed by the raffle.

“Overall on the day we raised a total of €3,000.”
