All About Cork: Series of events to be held as part of Heritage Week

Heritage Week kicks off at Blackpool Library

A series of events will be held in the Blackpool area for Heritage Week with Blackpool Library hosting four events that will be sure to garner local interest.

Organised by the Heritage Council, National Heritage Week takes place from Saturday, August 17, to Sunday, August 25.

On August 17 between 2pm and 3pm, in association with the Shandon Area History Group, a documentary film will be shown entitled ‘Ordinary women in extraordinary times’, which considers Nora and Sheila Wallace and Mary, Annie and Muriel MacSwiney, five women who played a vital role in the formation of the Irish state.

On August 21 from 10am to 11am, in an event likely to spark interest for those with an interest in genealogy, Blackpool Library will host a workshop entitled ‘Introduction to online resources for Irish family history research’.

A historical talk by Anne Twomey on the Duggan sisters of Blackpool will take place on August 22 between 2.30pm to 3.30pm.

Blackpool Library’s events for heritage will culminate on August 24 with a talk by Mark O’Neill on aspects of GAA games at 12pm.

National Heritage Week, an initiative by the Heritage Council, celebrates all things heritage. It brings together communities, families, organisations, cultural institutions, academics and enthusiasts, to build awareness about the value of heritage and support its conservation.

This year’s theme, ‘Connections, Routes, and Networks’, will explore the many ways we are linked through our heritage – from physical pathways like roads, canals, and trails to cultural ties through family, pastimes, history and traditions.

Cathedral Credit Union third-level bursaries for students

Cathedral Credit Union on Shandon Street is advising third-level students in the local areas of a chance to win one of two bursaries.

A spokesperson told The Echo: “We’re offering a €3,000 bursary award for members entering full-time third level education for the first time. This bursary supports you throughout your course. The course must be a minimum of three years duration and proof of enrolment is essential for all applicants.

“The €3,000 is paid in six stages to the successful applicant, whilst pursuing a third level qualification. Each stage payment will require proof of continued enrolment in the course.

“If you are already pursuing higher education, you could win our €1,000 bursary award.

“The €1,000 is paid in two stages to the successful applicant as a contribution towards their education and living expenses whilst pursuing a third level qualification.”

The annual recipients of both bursary awards are decided by the drawing of lots at a function to which all applicants will be invited. Either the applicant or a representative must be present to qualify for entry into the draw.

Members wishing to find out further information or wishing to enter the annual bursary award draws can contact Cathedral Credit Union staff or go to https://tinyurl.com/3ky8kb5h to download the application form.

The closing date for receipt of completed application forms is September 30.
