Cork students shine at Huawei awards

Two Cork students have each been granted bursaries worth €1,000 for their work on a project on developing a potentially lifesaving wearable device for children dealing with allergic reactions.

The Leeside students are part of a five-student team called Anaphero which focused on developing a wearable device that instantly alerts parents and caregivers when a child shows early signs of anaphylactic shock.

Utilising sensors to detect allergic reaction symptoms, the device uses 5G network and AI models for real-time analysis and connectivity.

The team’s work was recognised by the Huawei 2024 European Seeds for the Future project in Rome earlier this month, and they have been awarded as regional champion and will advance to the prestigious Tech4Good global final in China, slated for early next year.

Dylan Hussain and Luke O’Sullivan, both from Cork, have been each granted a €1,000 bursary from Huawei Ireland for their work as part of team Anaphero.

Mr Hussain, who is studying Computer Science at Technological University of Dublin, and Mr O’Sullivan, who is studying Physics at University College Cork, were among the 10 successful students from six universities who represented Ireland at the event.

Speaking about the event, Mr Hussain said he had thoroughly enjoyed his experience at the Huawei 2024 European Seeds for the Future event. “I was delighted to win regional champion along with my teammates.

“Seeing Huawei’s innovations firsthand was amazing, and I’m eager for what lies ahead.”

Mr O’Sullivan said that participating in the event had been an incredible opportunity.

“Winning the regional championship with my team was the highlight of the week,” Mr O’Sullivan said.

“I’m excited to travel to Shenzhen next year and witness firsthand the innovative work at Huawei.”

Luke McDonnell, head of PR at Huawei Ireland, praised the students’ achievements, saying they had demonstrated exceptional talent and innovation.
