INMO figures showed there were 78 patients on trolleys at Cork hospitals this morning.

The Number of people on trolleys at the Cork University Hospital  CUH are the highest in Ireland this morning, according to new figures from the Irish Nurses and Midwives Organisation.

The figures showed there are 78 people on trolleys in Cork hospitals, 65  of these at the CUH. This figure was higher than that at University Hospital Limerick, which usually has the highest trolley figures, and where there  61 patients on trolleys.

60 people are on trolleys in CUH’s emergency department, with a further 5 on trolleys elsewhere in the hospital, while in The Mercy, there are 11 people on trolleys in the ED and 2 elsewhere.

According to the HSE, there were 34 delayed transfers of care in CUH as of Wednesday morning at 8am and 11 in the Mercy.

The term refers to patients ready for discharge or transfer who have completed their acute inpatient hospital care but are still occupying a bed – often people waiting for a nursing home bed.

Nationally, 406 admitted patients are waiting for hospital beds this morning, with 314 patients waiting in the emergency department and 92 are in wards elsewhere.

Cork INMO rep Colm Porter previously told The Echo that it was “a worrying trend” to see trolley figures so high during the summer months, when usually peak hospital occupancy would be seen during the winter.

“Even though every single ward in the CUH is regularly at 100% occupancy, the fact that they are putting trolleys into wards is increasing the pressure on nurses and their ability to deliver safe patient care,” said Mr Porter.
