The helicopter crew of Rescue 117 today brought a 60-year-old tourist to safety today after she suffered a severely fractured leg following a bad fall on a mountain in West Cork.

Valentia Coast Guard received a call from the National Ambulance Service, just after 2.15pm on Tuesday, seeking assistance in getting to safety a woman who had fallen on the Sugarloaf mountain, south-west of Glengarriff, on the Beara Peninsula in West Cork.

The woman, who is believed to be a 60-year-old tourist from The Netherlands, had suffered a severe fracture to her leg.

The Rescue helicopter 117 was tasked from Waterford, and the Castletownbere Coast Guard unit was also dispatched to assist.

The woman was winched on board the helicopter at 4.10pm and flown to Kerry University Hospital in Tralee.

It is understood that four crew members were on board the helicopter, while the coast guard unit consisted of eight or nine crew members.
