Details of Cork hurlers homecoming due in coming days

Details of the homecoming event for the Cork hurling team are due to be announced in the coming days.

The Echo understands that arrangements for a homecoming next week are still being finalised and, while no decision has yet been announced, SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh is believed to be a top contender to stage the event.

Asked about the details for the Rebels’ homecoming, a spokesperson for Cork GAA said: “Details will be announced later in the week.”

Talks about the details of a homecoming have been taking place with Cork City Council, the Cork County GAA Board, and An Garda Síochána.

Speaking to The Echo this week, chief superintendent Tom Myers — who is in charge of policing in the Cork city Garda division — said that there would be a busy week of preparations for the weekend of the All-Ireland and afterwards.

He said Cork City Council and the GAA would advise gardaí on likely figures for an All-Ireland homecoming.

“Certainly, if they come back with the All-Ireland trophy, I’m sure that Cork city will be rocking on Monday night. 

"Hopefully, when we wake up on Tuesday morning everyone is hunky-dory and everyone has had a great night,” he said.

Fanzone

Meanwhile, SuperValu Páirc Uí Chaoimh will play host to a fanzone experience on Sunday for those who are not travelling up to Dublin. On Tuesday, 15,000 tickets — all free of charge — were made available for the fanzone, with all tickets allocated within 45 minutes.

Cork GAA and Cork City Council are appealing to those who have secured these free tickets to use them and ensure “the best possible atmosphere at the stadium”.

People will be able to cancel their tickets via their Eventmaster account, should they decide not to attend.

Those tickets, the council and the GAA said, could then be made available to others closer to the time.
