'There is a crisis in childcare in Cork city': Councillors seek briefing on status of childcare provision

Ms Harmon said she believes additional supports are needed for those working in the sector.

Newly-elected Labour councillor Laura Harmon raised childcare provision in Cork city at this week’s meeting of Cork City Council, tabling a motion proposing that the council would invite the Cork City Childcare Committee to attend a full council meeting to brief councillors on the status of childcare provision in the city.

The motion was unanimously agreed by councillors.

Speaking after the meeting, Ms Harmon said there is a need for additional childcare options in the city.

“There is a crisis in childcare in Cork city, and parents tell me all the time that they are extremely stressed by the lack of options,” said Ms Harmon.

“It’s so important that councillors, elected by the people, who make important planning decisions for Cork city, are aware of the childcare needs in Cork.”

Ms Harmon said she believes additional supports are needed for those working in the sector.

This was echoed by Ciara O’Connor, an early-years educator and manager from Bishopstown who said there is a “recruitment crisis” in the sector “due to the low wages and conditions”.

“Retention of staff is a huge factor in many settings and we are losing so many incredible graduates to other sectors,” said Ms O’Connor.

“I am a graduate of MTU with a Level 8 in early years education, with over 13 years’ experience in the sector, and for the last 13 years I have continuously engaged in further education.

“I have come to the decision I can no longer afford to stay working in the profession that I love and have given everything to.”
