Two fundraising hikes will be undertaken this week in honour of Cork’s Mercy Hospital Cancer CARE centre.

The hikes, organised by members of the INVOLVE committee at Johnson Controls on Albert’s Quay, will take place in Killarney on June 28, in memory of Micheál Sheridan, who spearheaded the cancer CARE centre project.

With an internal company target of €5,000, the funds raised from the two hikes will go directly to the project to aid ongoing operational costs.

An additional GoFundMe page has been set-up with a target of €1,000 for public donations.

Rekindle

Speaking to The Echo, event organiser, John Duggan, of the INVOLVE Committee at Johnson Controls, said that the Mercy was chosen as the charity partner due to his previous interactions with Mr Sheridan in a former role, and that he was eager to rekindle their working relationship through fundraising activities.

“I wanted to strike up that working relationship again only to find out he was battling cancer himself at the time, so it took on even more significance.

“We’re doing this for him.”

“The cancer CARE centre was a project that I remember speaking to him about,” he added. “That project will be his legacy.”

“Since his passing, it’ll be an emotional day.”

Fund

Meanwhile, a fund to support Mr Sheridan’s family following his recent death will remain open in the days ahead, having already raised more than twice its initial target.

After Mr Sheridan passed away, a family friend set up a GoFundMe page to raise funds to help the family, with an initial target of €10,000. The family friend told The Echo they had been asked by a number of people to keep the fundraiser open.

“People have said they had only just heard about it, and they want to have the chance to let other people know about it and give them time to contribute.

“Also, a few others say they would like to contribute when they get paid next week,” they added.

“I know the family can’t thank people enough for their generosity.”

To make a contribution, see the fundraiser “Micheál Sheridan — The Sheridan Family Education Fund” on GoFundMe.com.
