MUNSTER Technological University (MTU) has sought planning for the construction of a new high performance indoor athletics centre (HPAC) at its Bishopstown campus.

The planning application lodged with Cork City Council proposes the construction of a part single part three storey athletics centre with associated sports laboratories, classrooms and studios.

If green lit, it would link to the existing MTU Arena (Phase 1) building, and would also include an external roof terrace. The proposed site for the HPAC is located to the southwest corner of the MTU Bishopstown campus, currently an all-weather pitch.

A planning report submitted with the application stated that MTU currently has permission for the construction of a new all-weather pitch which would serve as a replacement. The planning report said the proposed HPAC would be developed in conjunction with Athletics Ireland who would also use the facilities.

According to the report, the centre would assist in developing coaching and technical education and support athletes performance development.
