Cork voters will take to the polling stations tomorrow to have their say as to who should represent them at a local level.

A total of 122 candidates have been officially nominated to stand for election to Cork County Council — an increase of 14% on the numbers declared in 2019.

Twelve parties are represented with 22 non-party candidates.

Four parties, Independent Ireland, The Irish People, Ireland First, and Glór — Voice of the People, have nominated candidates for the first time.

Cork County Council said the number of female candidates has increased by more than a third with 41 candidates registering, up from 30 in 2019.

Fine Gael have the highest number of candidates in the county area at 24, followed by Fianna Fáil (23), then Independents (22), then Sinn Féin (10) and the Green Party (10).

Additionally, there are eight Independent Ireland candidates vying for election, seven Social Democrats candidates, six Aontú candidates, and five Labour candidates along with three from The Irish People, two from Ireland First, one from Glór — Voice of the People and one People Before Profit candidate.

The last of the polling cards for voters were expected to be delivered by June 3.

Polling cards are issued for information purposes only and are not required to vote.

All electors should bring some form of ID with them to their polling station as they may be required to prove evidence of identity.

Polling stations will be open from 7am to 10pm.

Counting

The counting of votes will take place in three centres across the county, the returning officer for local elections in County Cork, Maurice Manning, confirmed a number of weeks ago.

All of the county boxes, which will contain European and local ballot papers, will be opened in Mallow on the morning of Saturday, June 8.

The European election ballot papers will be transferred to the Ireland South count centre, which will be in Nemo Rangers GAA club.

The West Cork local electoral areas (LEAs) are Bantry-West Cork, Bandon-Kinsale, and Skibbereen-West Cork.

The count centre for the West Cork LEAs is in the community centre in Clonakilty.
