Children in Cork montessori prepare to go to the polls for their own elections

A MONTESSORI school in Bishopstown had a special visitor this week ahead of the children going to the polls next week for their own school election.

Teachers in Scoil An Spioraid Naoimh montessori wanted to do something to help the children understand why there are so many election posters hanging up in the community, so students will be voting next weel for their favourite TV character, with a list that includes Peppa Pig, a minion and Bluey.

Teacher Sinead Hennesy said that the children have been coming in asking questions about the politicians they see on the posters in the area and “so we decided to hold our own election to help them to understand what an election is about and how it works.”

The children have been learning about what an election is and have put up their own posters in the classroom. They even have an election booth.

The school invited European election candidate John Mullins, who grew up in Bishopstown, to the school this week to answer questions about running in an election.

Mr Mullins was previously CEO of Bord Gáis, Chairperson of the Port of Cork, President of Cork Chamber and Director of Pairc Ui Chaoimh, and the children asked him questions such as how he feels about running for an election, where he lives and what he liked to eat on the campaign.

Mr Mullins said he was delighted to pop into the montessori at Scoil An Spioraid Naoimh.

“My brothers attended this school and my parents live close by so I know the area and the school well.

“I think it is fantastic to see the children learning about the election and politics and I was delighted to answer their questions.

“It is great to educate kids on the political process at such a young age.”
