Public to have say on Bantry flood relief plan options

Bantry, West Cork, Ireland. 27th Sept, 2023. Storm Agnes has hit West Cork this morning with torrential rain and high winds causing localised flooding, fallen trees and hazardous driving conditions. Although water breached the flood defences, no damage was done and the pumps stayed idle. Picture: Andy Gibson.

MEMBERS of the public in Bantry are being invited to have their say on emerging options for the West Cork town’s flood relief scheme, with options for flood mitigation displayed at a public participation event to be held next week.

Officials from Cork County Council and the Office of Public Works as well as representatives of the appointed engineering consultants, JB Barry and Partners, will be present at the Maritime Hotel between 4pm and 8pm on May 30 to hear the views of townspeople and those from the surrounding area.

According to Mayor of Co Cork Mayor Frank O’Flynn, the event in Bantry marks a “significant milestone in the development of Bantry Flood Relief Scheme”.

“The scheme aims to provide flood protection to a community which is regularly impacted by major flood events,” said Mr Flynn.

“I would encourage members of the public to attend the event to put forward their thoughts and comments in relation to the range of solutions proposed.”

This is the second public participation event about the Bantry Flood Relief Scheme.

A previous event was held in May 2022 during the early stages of its development, with a third event to be held when the preferred option will be put before the public.

Complex projects

Cork County Council CEO Valerie O’Sullivan said flood relief schemes were very complex projects which require extensive analysis and consideration before the identification of an appropriate option.

“Extensive investigations including detailed hydrological and hydraulic modelling have been completed in Bantry,” said Ms O’Sullivan.

“It is important for us to engage with residents, businesses and other stakeholders to ensure that together we can develop the best flood mitigation measures for all.”

Members of the public can submit comments in writing to info@bantryfrs.ie or by post to Bantry Flood Relief Scheme, JBA Consulting, Unit 24 Grove Island, Corbally, Limerick.

Information posters and a feedback questionnaire will also be available on the project website  https://bantryfrs.ie/ after the event.
