Rainbows rise proudly over Cork as city celebrates awareness week

THE Rainbow Flag was raised over Cork City Hall and other facilities across Cork recently to mark the launch of International Day Against Homophobia, Transphobia, Lesbophobia and Biphobia as part of Cork LGBTI+Awareness Week, a week of awareness events organised by Cork City’s LGBTI+ Inter-Agency Group.

The week of events, from May 13 to May 19, aimed to demonstrate the role communities and public service organisations can play in challenging hatred and prejudice.

Community Rainbow Flag ceremonies took place at the Glen Resource Centre, Nano Nagle Place, Sunday’s Well Rugby Club, and Collins Barracks.

“We are delighted to raise the Rainbow Flag, this is a way for us to highlight that our centre is a place of welcome to all,” Glen Resource Centre manager Roy Watson said.

“We feel this is totally in keeping with the spirit of Nano Nagle who founded a community to tackle the serious social issues of her day: Poverty and educational disadvantage,” Nano Nagle Place CEO John Smith said.
