All About Cork: €1 million renovation of Mayfield store completed

The newly revamped Higgins SuperValu Mayfield was officially launched last week with owner, Tom Higgins, saying the day would simply not have been possible without the support of the local community, their staff, and Musgraves.

“It was a team effort,” he said.

The store has undergone a significant redevelopment in recent months, both structurally and environmentally, following an investment of €1m.

Tom Higgins, who hails from the local area, said that work began late last year in order to increase the offering for Christmas.

Six months later, Higgins SuperValu Mayfield is now offering new expertly led deli and butcher counters, an expanded bakery range, a dedicated prepared meals range, as well as a new look off-licence.

New sustainability measures such as energy-efficient refrigeration doors and LED lighting have been implemented, he said.

In addition, Mr Higgins says the store is offering a range of new products from suppliers such as The Happy Pear and Donnybrook Fair as well as a dedicated meal solutions zone.

“It’s been great to see people’s reactions,” Mr Higgins said, “It’s been overwhelming at times. People are delighted.

“The outpouring of good wishes from our community, both for myself and the team, has truly validated all the effort we put into completing the refurbishment so efficiently.”

The investment has led to a 35% reduction in energy consumption in store and will also result in the creation of new jobs, Mr Higgins said.

The store currently employs 32 people.

“We are looking to build on this and to grow and increase jobs in the next year. The target is to create another eight to 10 jobs over the next six to 12 months,” Mr Higgins said.

Children’s cycle skills track is granted funding

A project to develop a children’s cycle skills track in the north east ward is among those to be granted funding under the Community Climate Action Fund.

The Railway Park Cork Community Group has been allocated €25,000 for a project to implement an activity track that aims to support young bicycle riders to learn basic skills.

St Luke’s Community Garden has been allocated just under €50,000 to take the existing community garden to the “next level” of community composting and co-operation.

Newbury House has been allocated just under €70,000 for the Mayfield Community Climate Impact Committee project described as “bringing together a geographically community working in a collaborative way to support climate actions in each of their sites” while Upper Glanmire Community Association has been allocated just under €30,000 for the installation of solar panels and EV charger.

The funding allocations have been welcomed locally by Green Party councillor Oliver Moran.

“Many of these are really exciting projects,” he said. “Cork City Council took a chance by leading the country on this initiative.

“That risk-taking is now bearing fruit with communities in the city being the first to receive these grants.”

Mr Moran said that each of the projects supported shows how climate action and community development go hand-in-hand.

“It’s not only what’s good for the planet, it’s what’s good for the people of an area too. These projects are real exemplars of that,” he added.

Mayfield Sports Complex offering summer camps

Mayfield Sports Complex will be running summer sports camps and a swim camp during the school holidays.

Sports camps will run from 9am to 2pm on July 1 to 5, on July 8 to 12 and July 15 to 19.

These camps are aimed at children aged from five to 13 and will include a range of activities such as soccer, gymnastics, and martial arts.

The camps are priced at €90 per person per camp with family discounts available.

The weekly swim camps will run from July 1 to 5, July 8 to 12, July 15 to 19 and July 22 to 24.

These are aimed at children from age five to teens and cost €80 per person per camp, also with family discounts available.

Clubs successful in sports capital grant applications

Several local clubs have been successful in their applications to Cork City Council’s minor sports capital grant applications scheme.

Cork North East Labour Party councillor John Maher shared details of some of the funding allocations in the ward, congratulating the clubs on their successful applications.

Among those to receive funding were Glanmire Ladies Basketball who received €2,884, Leeds AFC who received €4,596, and Riverstown FC who received €4,355.
