A North Cork credit union has announced that it has been officially designated as a Sustainable Energy Community (SEC), meaning it will be in a position to offer insights and guidance on grants, free energy upgrades, and valuable resources to homes and businesses become more sustainable.

Synergy Credit Union has been designated an SEC by the Sustainable Energy Authority of Ireland (SEAI), something it says marks a giant leap forward in its commitment to fostering a culture of sustainability within the communities it serves.

As an SEC, Synergy Credit Union is preparing a comprehensive energy master plan for the region.

Roadmap

The financial institution says this roadmap will chart a course towards reduced energy consumption and increased efficiency across various sectors, including homes, agriculture, business and transportation.

It intends to show how homes can be warmer, more comfortable living spaces with lower energy bills.

It will assist in the introduction of sustainable practices for a thriving agricultural sector.

For businesses, it will offer energy-saving solutions to boost efficiency and profitability.

It also intends to assist in exploring greener transportation options for a cleaner future.

Baseline Study

The credit union partnered with XD Consulting, which completed a detailed energy baseline study, covering all of the areas within Synergy’s community, including Fermoy, Kilworth, Watergrasshill, Rathcormac, Killavullen, Glanworth, Ballyduff, and the Cork city operating area.

The study looked at the current state of homes, assessing potential retrofitting needs, from minor tweaks to comprehensive upgrades.

The credit union will hold a community energy use information night at 7pm on Wednesday, May 22, at the Fermoy Community Youth Centre.

There, SEAI representatives will offer information about available grants, free energy upgrades, and valuable resources to encourage a more sustainable future.

The Synergy Credit Union green loans team will offer insights and guidance on financing home retrofit projects, helping to make sustainability more accessible.

Synergy Credit Union CEO Martina Cotter said the credit union was firmly committed to fostering a culture of sustainability within local communities.

“Our designation as an SEC allows us to make a tangible impact by developing a data-driven energy master plan.

“We invite everyone to join us on May 22 to learn more and contribute to this important initiative,” Ms Cotter said.

Commitment

Synergy Credit Union sustainable energy community committee chairperson John Feeney said becoming a SEAI-designated SEC was a testament to the credit union’s ongoing commitment to environmental responsibility.

“The energy master plan will not only help us reduce carbon emissions but will also provide valuable information for residents on improving energy efficiency in their homes.

“We encourage everyone to join us on May 22 and be a part of building a sustainable future,” Mr Feeney said.
