A NEW clinic described as a “hub for cutting-edge sports medicine research, education, and patient care” has opened at the Mardyke Arena University College Cork.

The clinic has been established by UPMC Sports Medicine in collaboration with the Mardyke Arena UCC.

UPMC already operates clinics in Dublin, Waterford, Limerick, Tipperary, and Mayo.

Managing director of UPMC Ireland, Eamonn Fitzgerald, said the opening of the Cork facility marked an “exciting day”.

“This new clinic is now part of a national and international sports medicine network and the UPMC team in Cork will work in close partnership with the network of expertise that will develop from this significant collaboration to deliver the best outcomes to all patients of all ages,” he added.

The clinic will offer a wide range of services, including injury prevention, evaluation, treatment, and rehabilitation.

It will also serve as a training ground for future healthcare professionals and sports medicine specialists through educational programmes, workshops, and internships.

Additionally, UPMC said its clinical experts will collaborate with academic partners on research projects aimed at advancing knowledge related to sports medicine, physical-activity health interventions, and improving patient outcomes.

UCC president, Professor John O’Halloran, warmly welcomed the opening of the clinic.

“This collaboration with UPMC Sports Medicine represents an exciting opportunity for all of us in UCC and builds on our successful partnership in oncology research.

“UPMC is a fantastic partner with academic institutions around the world in the areas of health research, technology, and sport, and we look forward to growing our collaborations into the future,” he said.

Meanwhile, chairman of Mardyke Arena UCC, John Mullins, said he is delighted that a world-class sports medicine facility has opened at the Mardyke Arena.

“This facility will support athletes and teams within the campus, but it will also serve the South Munster area, providing healthcare solutions including advanced diagnostics.

“Combined with research and teaching, the UPMC Sports Medicine clinic at Mardyke Arena will add enormous value to the region in sports and non-sports medicine.”
