Traffic volumes having 'detrimental impact' on Cork town, says local election candidate

Election candidate Andrew Ring says a relief road is needed to divert heavy traffic around Charleville town.
A LOCAL-election candidate has joined calls for a relief road in a Co Cork town infamous for traffic congestion.
Andrew Ring, who is standing for election to Cork County Council in the Kanturk-Mallow municipal district for the Social Democrats, said a number of recent tragedies emphasised the need for a relief road for Charleville.
Mr Ring was speaking at a visit by Social Democrats leader Holly Cairns to Charleville on Tuesday.
“I was happy to have the opportunity to brief Holly on pressing local issues, including the need for a relief road around Charleville,” he said.
“Heavy traffic passing through the town, travelling between Cork and Limerick, has led to concerns about poor air quality, unacceptable congestion and road safety, with a number of fatal incidents on the main street in recent years.
“I fully support calls by concerned locals for a relief road to alleviate the detrimental impact that traffic volumes are having on the town.”

Ms Cairns said Mr Ring would make “an exceptional councillor” for the area.
“I would urge as many people as possible to get behind Andrew’s campaign, so we can achieve our goal of increasing our representation on local authorities on June 7,” she said.
