Seven influential Cork people have been named as recipients of this year’s prestigious Lord Mayor’s Civic and Culture Awards.

Each year, six people across Cork receive an award in recognition of their efforts to improve their community, as well as an additional winner of the annual Lord Mayor’s Culture Award.

The gala awards ceremony, due to take place on April 10 at the Concert Hall in Cork city, will see the seven nominees bestowed their medals, alongside those chosen for the Lord Mayor’s Community and Voluntary Awards, which will be announced on the night.

Independent councillor Kieran McCarthy, Lord Mayor of Cork, has announced that playwright, director, and writer Marion Wyatt is to be this year’s recipient of the Culture Award.

Towering figure

“Marion Wyatt stands as a towering figure in Cork’s vibrant arts scene, celebrated for her multi-faceted contributions as a director, playwright, artist, and educator,” Mr McCarthy said.

“With a career spanning decades, Marion’s creative journey has been one of unwavering dedication and artistic exploration. She is fully deserving of this honour for the impact she has made on generations of students, actors, and theatregoers. Her’s is an authentic Cork voice which deserves to be celebrated.”

One of the recipients of a Lord Mayor’s Civic Award is director of GMCBeats and co-ordinator of the Kabin Studio in Knocknaheeny, Garry McCarthy. He has been recognised for his community work and long-term commitment to empowering young people through music.

Also named for his contribution to music and cultural heritage in Cork city is single piper Norman O’ Rourke.

In addition, recognised for her commitment to the Cork Migrant Centre, Dr Naomi Masheti has also been named as a recipient, alongside Fahmeda Naheed, for her service and dedication to the Irish-Pakistani community in Cork.

Jean Downey has also been recognised for her work with Bishopstown Tidy Towns, and Donnacha O’ Callaghan for his outstanding commitment and contribution to rugby in Munster.
