A SECONDARY school teacher who lives on Middle Glanmire Road has announced his intention to contest the local elections for Fianna Fáil.

Shane Ryan, aged 30, has taught history and geography in North Monastery Secondary School for seven years, where he is best known for running for running the history club.

Mr Ryan will be contesting the Cork City North East Ward after being involved in Ógra Fianna Fáil and the election campaigns of Cllr Tony Fitzgerald and Cllr John Sheehan.

Despite his long involvement in Fianna Fáil, “I never thought of running myself until someone suggested that the North East ward needed somebody,” he told The Echo.

If elected, he hopes to champion an anti-littering campaign and bring more bins to the area, and work with local schools to ensure that they are getting all the support that they need.

“Youth services and sports services are a big thing for me – I’m passionate about young people, and they need more services,” he said.

Local history is another passion of his, and he said that he hoped to work with local heritage groups to promote that as much as possible.

“I just really believe in the power of community, whatever good work is being done by community groups, I’ll be open to support it, because you can’t beat local people doing things for their community,” he said.

Cllr Tony Fitzgerald said “Shane is a great addition to the Fiann Fail team to contest the North East Local elections for Cork City Council.

“He has a great interest in community and from his teaching background he has a particular understanding of young people’s needs.

“He is committed and dedicated to working for the people of the North East ward and I wish his every success and support."
