Gardaí launch murder inquiry into fatal Cobh sword attack

Gardaí have this evening launched a murder investigation into the death of Ian Baitson, who died following sword attack in Cobh last Friday night.

The 32 year old father of one who worked as a chef, was seriously injured during an assault in a car park on Newtown Rd in Cobh at around 8.55pm on Friday.

He was taken to hospital and pronounced dead on Tuesday afternoon.

In a statement gardaí said they are continuing to investigate Mr Baitson’s death following the incident.

“A post-mortem examination has now been carried out, and preliminary results have been provided to investigating gardaí. Although results are not being released for operational reasons, gardaí have now commenced a murder investigation."

A Senior Investigating Officer (SIO) is leading the investigation, and a designated Garda Family Liaison Officer is providing continuous support to the family of Mr Baitson, ensuring they are kept informed of developments.

Gardaí are appealing for any witnesses to the incident to come forward.

“Additionally, individuals who were traveling along the Newtown Road between 8.45 pm and 9.15 pm on Friday the 15th of March and possess camera footage, including dash-cam footage, are asked to provide it to investigating gardaí,” read the statement.

“Anyone with information pertinent to the investigation is urged to contact Cobh Garda Station at 021 490 8530, the Garda Confidential Line at 1800 666 111, or any Garda Station.”
