HOUSEHOLDERS and businesses in Cork city have been advised to take necessary precautions to protect their property ahead of a period of high astronomical spring tides this weekend.

This morning’s high tide occurred at 4.35am and evening high tide is predicted to occur at 5pm.

Tomorrow, morning high tide is predicted to occur at 5.20am and evening high tide is predicted to occur at 5.40pm.

Cork City Council said the periods of high tides are predicted to cause minor localised flooding along low-lying areas in the city centre.

These areas include Morrison’s Quay, Mathew Quay, Mathew St, Union Quay, Trinity Bridge, South Terrace, Rutland St, Sawmill St, Lavitts Quay, Kyrls St, Kyrls Quay, Crosses Green, Proby’s Quay, Sharman Crawford St, and Wandesford Quay.

The local authority said that its flood assessment team is monitoring the situation closely and will continue to issue regular updates on the tidal forecast to its X account (formerly known as Twitter), @corkcitycouncil, as well as on its website, www.corkcity.ie.

The period of high astronomical tides is forecast to continue until Tuesday.

Meanwhile, a grey and dreary weekend has been forecast by Met Éireann. Today is expected to be mostly cloudy with scattered outbreaks of rain and drizzle, most frequent in the east and south.

The national forecaster has also predicted that there will be some mist present today.

It forecasts highest temperatures of 6C to 9C.

Tomorrow, plenty of cloud with further outbreaks of rain are expected, particularly in the eastern half of the country. Highest temperatures of 7C to 10C are forecast with light to moderate north to northeast winds.
