Uisce Éireann moves to allay concerns over discoloured water in the Douglas area of Cork city

Uisce Éireann has moved to address concerns over discoloured water coming from taps in the Douglas area of Cork city, citing recent remedial works as the cause of the issue.
On Friday the utility company issued an advisory to customers in the Douglas Road, South Doulas Road, Well Road, Greenhills and surrounding areas informing them that “reactive flushing” works were being undertaken on the local water network.
“Following complex repair works in the area last night (Thursday), this may have caused increased instances in discoloured water at customers taps. Crews are on the ground carrying out flushing works to clear the network of sediment from the old cast iron watermains,” read the Uisce Éireann statement.
They advised those with discoloured tap water to run the tap for up to 20 minutes, a process they said would usually restore water to a clean colour.
“Water is safe to drink once the water is running clear. Uisce Éireann continues to advise customers not to drink discoloured water,” read the statement.
The company moved to allay concerns about the water supply, saying ongoing testing and analysis was ongoing in conjunction with “extensive monitoring across Cork city’s distribution network”.
“This ensures the water is compliant with drinking water regulations and is safe to drink. The results of these ongoing tests are shared with the EPA and the HSE.”
“If there are water quality issues in your home or business, please contact the Uisce Éireann customer care helpline, open 24/7, on 1800 278 278”.
