MUNSTER Technological University (MTU) has announced it is discontinuing the provision of disposable cups in canteens at all of its campuses in a bid to reduce its carbon footprint and to promote a “sense of responsibility and awareness” among staff and students.

The technological university, with campuses in Cork and Kerry, said the move was being brought in from February 8.

By phasing out disposable cups, the university aims to minimise plastic waste, contributing to broader global efforts in the sustainable and responsible use of resources.

“This move to reusable cups is a positive step forward in MTU’s ongoing commitment to sustainability and environmental leadership,” president of MTU, Maggie Cusack, said.

“By implementing this initiative, we are not only reducing our carbon footprint but also instilling a sense of responsibility and awareness among our university community.”

As an alternative to disposable cups, staff and students are encouraged to use their own reusable cups and will also have the option to buy a reusable cup for a refundable €2 deposit.
