Cork's Tony Walsh recognised at Gaisce Leader Appreciation Awards 

Cork-based Tony Walsh was among several awardees recognised at the recent Gaisce President’s Award Leaders Appreciation Awards.

The event celebrated the work of President’s Award Leaders from all over Ireland who work voluntarily, supporting encouraging and guiding young people who undertake their Gaisce award each year.

Twenty-four dedicated individuals representing various organisations that work with Gaisce, including post-primary schools, youth organisations, prisons and prison schools, were honoured at the event.

Among them was Tony Walsh from Doras Training Centre in Cork, who was presented with an award for supporting Gold Gaisce Awardees.

Speaking at the awards ceremony Gaisce CEO Avril Ryan said: “Our President’s Award Leaders are brilliant and dedicated volunteers, without whom Gaisce would not be the successful non-formal education programme that it is.

“President’s Award Leaders make a huge difference in the lives of young people by giving so generously of their time and wisdom, ensuring young people can do their very best to reach their full potential through the award challenge areas.

“The impact that President’s Award Leaders have made on the lives of young people will continue to be felt long after they have received their Gaisce Awards”.

A special message from the President Michael D Higgins was read at the event.

It said: “The challenges that young people undertake as part of their Gaisce Award, under your guidance, offer many benefits which will help to equip them as they venture out into the world.

“The work that you are doing with young people inspires and helps them to develop their personal and social skills and fosters their sense of community — you all have made a tangible difference in the lives of so many young people.”
