Cork city’s oldest barbershop has hit the market, with an asking price of €285,000.
Earlier this month, Mick Moriarty, proprietor of The Baldy Barber, told he was preparing to put the iconic premises up for sale.
Mr Moriarty said the barbershop would remain open for business until a definitive sale has been confirmed.
The building, located on Great William O’Brien St in Blackpool, is now available for purchase.
Estate agents DNG Kevin Condon said the three storey building is both commercial and residential, comprising of the barbershop on the ground floor, with a three bedroom residential property overhead.
“We are inviting offers in excess of €285,000 for this property,” DNG added.
In a post on social media earlier this month, Mr Moriarty said it was with a “heavy heart and a deep sense of nostalgia” that he shared the news of the potential sale of the building.
“If the sale goes through, it marks the end of an era for The Baldy Barber of Blackpool.
“This business, which has been a cornerstone of the community for years, was established by my late father, Peter Moriarty, on the first day of February 1937.
“It became a place where stories were shared, laughter echoed, and bonds were formed,” he continued.
Mr Moriarty said the decision stemmed from a decline in business over time.
“The absence of customers in the chairs has led us to this difficult crossroads.
“Despite our efforts to adapt and weather the changing times, it is apparent that the landscape of our beloved community has shifted, and the bustling energy that once filled our salon has waned,” he said.
“The upcoming sale deeply saddens our family, especially me, and impacts the entire Blackpool and greater Cork community.
“The cherished memories created within these walls are invaluable, and it is heartbreaking to contemplate saying goodbye to a place filled with such sentimental value.”
He concluded by saying that it has been “an honour” to serve the local community for so many years.
“I want to express my deepest gratitude to everyone who has been a part of this journey – our loyal customers, dedicated staff, and the wonderful residents of Blackpool.
“Your support has been the bedrock of our success, and I carry these memories with me as we navigate this challenging chapter,” he said, adding that the barbershop would remain open “until a definitive sale has been confirmed”.
