MTU Cork School of Music orchestra set to play the National Concert Hall
The MTU Cork School of Music Orchestra, under the baton of Thomas Doyle, will bring the festival to a close with Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.
THE MTU Cork School of Music Symphony Orchestra will be the focus of a major event taking place at the National Concert Hall next month.
They will be performing at the 29th Annual Festival of Youth Orchestras on February 10.
Works being performed include Shostakovich’s Waltz No 2, a John Williams’ Trilogy, and the Irish Premiere of Coole Music Youth Orchestra's Katharina Baker’s Celtic Creature Suite, featuring Selkies and the Púca.
The MTU Cork School of Music Orchestra will bring the festival to a close under the baton of Thomas Doyle and to the tune of Stravinsky’s Firebird Suite.
Mr Doyle spoke of his excitement at being involved.
"The IAYO (Irish Association of Youth Orchestras) Festival of Youth Orchestras is an integral part of Ireland's music ecology and we are delighted that the MTU CSM Symphony Orchestra has been chosen to perform at this year's event in the National Concert Hall,” he said.
“The festival itself is always a memorable affair for all involved. I can distinctly remember my own experience of playing double bass with the County Wexford Youth Orchestra as part of the ninth festival twenty years ago.
Other anticipated highlights this year include The Music Generation Laois Trad Orchestra, who are performing excerpts from their new suite of music, The Impossible Dream, composed by Martin Tourish and the Music Generation Laois Trad Orchestra.
The piece celebrates the achievements of Portlaoise aviator James Fitzmaurice, who was part of the very first successful transatlantic flight from East to West, from Baldonnel to Canada, in 1928.
The event will feature a variety of music with two concerts taking place at 1pm, and 7.30pm respectively.
