A number of councillors had also moved to address the rumours in recent days.

Cork City Council has said that rumours that refugees will be hosted in a retreat centre in Mayfield are “completely false”.

A spokesperson for Cork City Council told The Echo, “the Asset Management Company responsible for the operation of the Ennismore Retreat Centre has confirmed to the City Council that rumours surrounding [sic] are completely false.”

Councillors John Maher, Ken O’Flynn and Joe Kavanagh had all addressed the matter in recent days as speculation surrounding housing migrants in the former Dominican Retreat Centre at Ennismore circulated on social media.

Fine Gael Cork City Councillor for the North East Ward Joe Kavanagh said “I've had a number of calls today in relation to Ennismore in Montenotte.

“I wish to clarify, with 100% certainty, that there are currently no plans in place to accommodate anyone at all in the old Dominicans Building in Ennismore - rumours currently circulating are 100% FALSE.

“This has been confirmed to me today by the current management of this building."

Labour councillor in the constituency, John Maher, also addressed the speculation on social media saying: "lots of false news and rumours about the site in Ennismore, Mayfield.

“Stop the false news, stop the hate & stop causing divide - I’ve spoken with Cork City Council officials who’ve made contact with the owners and the false news is incorrect and unhelpful.”

Independent Cllr Kenneth O'Flynn wrote to Minister for Integration Roderic O’Gorman, “to express the concerns that have surfaced in my constituency regarding the rumoured establishment of a new refugee centre in Dominicans, Ennismore Mayfield, Cork.”

He asked for confirmation from his department on the accuracy of these rumours.
