All existing loans will be extended automatically and patrons can borrow or return an item to any other branch once they bring their library card.

CLONAKILTY library is currently closed to facilitate refurbishment works, which when complete will “breathe fresh life into the space”.

Cork County Council said the works will include an internal upgrade of the children’s and adult library area with new shelving, new carpet and a new layout.

“Clonakilty is a really busy library and has lots of diverse activities.

“This refurbishment will breathe fresh life into the space and allow us to use it more flexibly with more mobile furniture and shelving,” a spokesperson for the council told The Echo.

“The council is excited about these changes and look forward to welcoming our library customers back as soon as possible.”

The local authority, in a post on X – the social media platform formerly known as Twitter – said it expects to reopen the library in early February.

All existing loans will be extended automatically and patrons can borrow or return an item to any other branch once they bring their library card.

The refurbishment of Clonakilty library follows the recent completion of a €4.8m renovation of a 19th century mill in the heart of Kinsale and its transformation into a state-of-the-art library and cultural space.

The project to repurpose the coastal town’s Old Mill received €2.17m from the Rural Regeneration and Development Fund and €2.6m from Cork County Council.
