Aontú gears up for local elections in Cork

AONTÚ has announced its local election hopefuls across Ireland, including three Cork City Council candidates and six Cork County Council candidates.

The party has also announced a candidate for the EU elections, which will take place on the same date as the local elections, in June 2024.

Aontú currently has one elected TD, founder Peadar Tóibín, who resigned from Sinn Féin at the end of 2018.

The party nominated 53 candidates for the last local elections, and three were elected as local councillors in Meath, Wexford and Cavan.

In 2024, Anna Daly will be running in the Cork City South Central constituency, Finian Toomey will be running in the Cork City North West constituency, and Joanne Murphy will be running in Cork City South West.

All three candidates unsuccessfully contested the 2019 local elections, with Toomey and Daly also contesting the 2020 general elections.

Those running for election to Cork County Council include Becky Kealy, who will be running in Kanturk, Lorraine Deane, who will be running in Skibbereen, and Paddy Scully, who will be running in Mallow, with the three candidates previously contesting the 2019 local elections and/or the 2020 general election.

Three candidates will be running for the first time: Mona Stromsoe in Midleton, Patrick Murphy in Bantry and Rosarie O’Leary in Macroom.

Bantry candidate Patrick Murphy, a fishing industry lobbyist, will also be running in the EU election as the Ireland South European Parliament Candidate, the first time that the party has ran a candidate in the EU elections.
