A QUARTET of Cork voluntary community groups have been honoured for their outstanding contributions in helping to promote positive health and wellbeing.

The category winners in the Active Community Awards, were presented with their awards by the Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran McCarthy, and Deputy Mayor of County Cork, Cllr John Healy, at a presentation ceremony in the Old Cork Waterworks Experience.

The awards were established by the Cork City Partnership to recognise individuals and groups who go ‘above and beyond’ in their efforts to promote sport and physical activities.

A total of 12 finalists were shortlisted across four different categories.

Sliabh Luachra Cycling scooped the Active Community Group Award, Sailabilty Kinsale won the Inclusion Award, the Campaign Award went to Ballyphehane Community Walking and the Active Community Champion Award was presented to Maire & Cornelius Marshall of Rebel Wheelers.

Speaking at the awards ceremony, Mr McCarthy, paid tribute to the winners for the great work they do within their respective communities.

“The four award winners represent an amazing variety of physical activity opportunities for the people of Cork,” said Mr McCarthy.

“As Cork City continues to grow, we must ensure that we provide the right opportunities to those that find safe harbour here. The work that each of you do ensures we can instil that sense of community to all that call Cork home.”

Sentiments echoed by Mr Healy, who said the awards winners cane be “immensely proud” of the contribution they make to their communities.

“Sport and physical activity provide an opportunity where people can find a sense of place and purpose. The benefits of physical activity are well documented and by providing these opportunities to such a diverse collection of people you should all be commended."

Tim Burke, community sports development officer with the Cork City Partnership, said the awards send a “powerful message” to Cork communities, encouraging people to get healthy and active.

“Volunteering is the lifeblood of communities. Our finalists work tirelessly to inspire groups and individuals and break down barriers to sport and physical activity,” said Mr Burke.

“We are delighted to recognise and celebrate your contribution to your communities," he added.

Each category winner received a bespoke Active Community Award medal, a framed certificate, a Carbery Group hamper, as well as their finalist video to further promote their work in the community.
