CORK’S SHARE crib is bringing joy to passers-by on PANA following its unveiling by the Lord Mayor in recent days.

The annual SHARE (Students Harness Aid for the Relief of the Elderly) fundraising effort is benefitting from the generosity of locals as fifth-year students take to the streets to collect vital funds.

Almost 2000 students from 22 schools across the city and county are donning the charity’s signature yellow jackets to brighten up Cork city for another festive season.

Lord Mayor of Cork Cllr. Kieran McCarthy switched on the lights of the crib while Bishop of Cork and Ross - Fintan Gavin and Bishop of Cork, Cloyne and Ross, Dr. Paul Colton both blessed the structure.

The atmosphere was enriched by Band 1 Brigade who performed under the baton of Captain Ben Jacobs. This marked the beginning of SHARE’s daily collections which will continue right up until Christmas Eve.

This will be the charity’s fiftieth year raising funds to improve the lives of Cork’s older population.

Lord Mayor Cllr Kieran McCarthy is calling on people to support the worthy cause.

“SHARE remains an important annual fundraising effort,” he said. “This annual tradition is an important initiative which the people of Cork have always given to generously. In the world that we live in today, it is really important that we leave no one behind in our communities and in society. The SHARE project offers so much hope and togetherness. I ask Corkonians to once again dig deep into their pockets and support the values that SHARE stands for.”

Ruth Fitzgibbon, SHARE executive, also spoke of the extra special nature of the 2023 SHARE charity drive.

“SHARE holds a special place in our hearts," she said. "Since September, we have been visiting SHARE residents every week. One of the residents taught me how to play pool, and we play together every Wednesday. It’s surprising how quickly you can build a friendship with someone when you find a common interest. We can all play a part in showing that we care.” The charity is now offering tap and QR code options to facilitate donations to the project."

Corkonians can also donate on the SHARE website ShareCork.org.
