Special festive uniforms for Mayfield group in pre-Christmas clean-up

VOLUNTEERS from Mayfield St Luke’s Tidy Towns group donned their Christmas jumpers and Santa hats for a festive clean-up.

With a week to Christmas, the group has been out in force to ensure the local area is looking its best for the festive season.

It’s been a busy year for the volunteers who, in addition to their usual litter picking and clearing throughout the area from Silversprings Hill to Wellington Rd, have also been engaging in a host of planting works.

This includes planting and re-planting flowers in the trough and boxes at St Luke’s Cross, planting for Mayfield Plants Positive at the Tank Field, Colmcille Avenue and Boherboy Rd, and maintaining the parklet outside the Frank O’Connor Library, among other projects.

Mayfield St Luke’s Tidy Towns group was set up by Cllr Joe Kavanagh in May 2017, and the Fine Gael councillor said it has gone from strength to strength ever since.

“People living in our community take great pride in their neighbourhoods and public spaces,” Mr Kavanagh said.

He said that a great level of enthusiasm and goodwill is shown to the Tidy Towns volunteers by local businesses and residents, as they pursue our various projects in the community.

The Mayfield councillor said that the group engenders positivity, pride in the locality, and a determination to highlight the best of the local community.

“The name ‘Mayfield and St Luke’s Tidy Towns’ derives from our status as a community organisation that links directly into Cork City Council, via both the St Luke’s Policing Forum and the Mayfield Policing Forum.

“The Tidy Towns organisation has a management committee which organises the fortnightly clean-ups, planting and painting, as well as planning future projects,” he explained.

Mr Kavanagh, on behalf of the group, thanked local businesses for their generous financial contributions to the voluntary group in 2023.

The group is already preparing for next year.

“Heading into 2024, we will continue our focus on encouraging biodiversity — whilst continuing our emphasis on litter-free streets — and the maintenance and upkeep of existing planting and painting projects,” he said.
