Pharmacists urge Cork people to get their flu vaccination

Pharmacists are urging those who have not received an annual flu vaccine yet to do so before the peak flu season hits.

The Irish Pharmacy Union (IPU) is also urging parents to book their children in for a nasal spray flu vaccine, which is now available free of charge in pharmacies nationwide.

A spokesperson explained: “Flu is a highly-infectious illness and while that can result in a very serious infection.

“We are now approaching the time of year where we see large numbers of hospitalisations and sadly a number of deaths.

“Flu vaccines are very effective and provide the best protection to individuals and the wider community.”

They explained that some people do not realise that flu vaccines have to be renewed each year, and that getting a vaccine or an infection last year does not provide them with any immunity this year.

The spokesperson continued: “While the majority of flu infections are not serious it is children and the elderly who are most likely to need hospitalisation”, saying that thankfully children can be protected by availing of a flu vaccine that is now free of charge everyone under 18.

“For parents concerned about the administration of the vaccine for their children, please be aware that the vaccine is given as a spray in each nostril, is not painful and is absorbed quickly”.

“Availing of the vaccine is simple and easy and will not only keep your children safe but will also protect the vulnerable in our communities.”
