A man in his 30s has been arrested after he was apprehended driving a stolen truck and damaging two Garda cars in the process.

The truck was reported stolen from Bandon last night, and was found this morning in Togher, leading to an area being cordoned off and a shot being discharged from a Garda firearm.

A spokesperson for An Garda Síochána told The Echo: "Gardaí received a report of the theft of a lorry from the Bandon area of Co Cork last night, Tuesday, 7th of November 2023 "This morning, the vehicle was located in the Togher area of Cork. The vehicle failed to stop when directed to do so by Gardaí.

"A managed containment operation was put in place by Gardaí with multiple units involved. The containment operation ended in the Forge Hill area of Togher.

"A man aged in his 30s was arrested in connection to this incident and is currently detained at a Garda Station in the Southern Region under Section 4 of the Criminal Justice Act 1984.” 

The spokesperson confirmed "Two Garda vehicles were damaged in the course of this operation”, but added: “No injuries were reported."

“A shot was discharged from a Garda firearm during this incident and as a result, GSOC have been notified of the incident."

They concluded: “Investigations are ongoing at this time.”
