The work is happening very quickly, with crews installing automated self-service checkouts in recent days.

The store is set to open before the end of November.

The 5,710 sq ft corner unit is on the ground floor of the 420-bed purpose-build student accommodation building, Lee Point, which will make the Tesco a popular spot for Cork students.

It’s the third Tesco Express store in Cork City, alongside St Finbarr’s Express on Douglas Road, which opened a decade ago in September 2013, and Dennehy’s Cross, which opened in 2009.

The project is part of Tesco Ireland’s €80 million investment this year, which will include the opening of eight new Tesco Express stores, and significant upgrade projects for 50 stores.

A spokesperson for Tesco told The Echo: “We are delighted to confirm that we will open a new Tesco Express at Counting House in South Main St Cork in the coming weeks.

“This store will create 17 new jobs in the area, and provide an extensive range of quality fresh Irish foods and will also feature produce from several local Cork producers.

“This store was one of several announced as part of our €80m investment in new store openings, extensive store refit and refurbishment upgrade programmes, and ongoing maintenance of our growing property portfolio this year.

“This significant expenditure figure underpins Tesco’s continued strong commitment to the Irish retail market.

“We’re looking forward to meeting customers and the community when we open in a few weeks’ time.”

Tesco will be the first tenant at the €30m Beamish Counting House development in Cork City.

The 150,000 sq ft mixed-use development by owners BAM has remained vacant since it was completed two years ago, at the former Beamish & Crawford Brewery site on South Main Street.
