Traffic disruption expected in Ovens during works to replace water mains 

WORKS are set to get underway shortly to replace over 1.2km of aged water mains in Ovens.

The project, which is being carried out by Uisce Éireann in partnership with Cork County Council, is part of the company’s Leakage Reduction Programme and is aimed at reducing water disruptions in the area due to burst pipes and leakage.

The works are due to get underway early next month and are scheduled to be completed by mid-December.

Uisce Éireann is advising local residents and businesses that there will be some disruption to traffic during the works.

The company said that there may also be some short-term water interruptions, but the project team will ensure that customers are given a minimum of 48 hours’ notice prior to any planned disruption

Programme Manager at Uisce Éireann, Jack Cronin said: “This project is another example of the significant investment programme by Uisce Éireann to improve the water network in Cork, prioritising investment where it is needed most and enabling these communities to thrive.

“We would like to thank customers in advance for their cooperation and patience while we complete these essential works.’’

He added: “Traffic management will be in place in the form of a road closure from the Ovens Bar to the junction with Killumney Road.

“Traffic lights will be in place from the junction of Killumney Road to the junction with Casey’s Road.

“Additional details in relation to the traffic management plan will be communicated locally.

“Local and emergency traffic will always be maintained.”

Uisce Éireann said that the works will also involve laying new water service connections from the public water main in the road to customers’ property boundaries and connecting it to the customer’s water supply.

Where the existing service connections on the public side are lead these are being replaced.

This project is being carried out by Ward and Burke Construction Ltd on behalf of Uisce Éireann.

Since 2018, Uisce Éireann has invested over €500m to upgrade the underground water network across the country through the delivery of the Leakage Reduction Programme.
