MUNSTER Technological University (MTU) has been granted conditional planning permission to create a new community work hub.
The university lodged the application with Cork City Council in August seeking permission for the extension and alteration of the Nexus Hall in the student centre at its Bishopstown campus.
The project includes the addition of a first-floor mezzanine level in the existing Nexus Hall to create a students' community work hub and the addition of a covered external escape stair.
There are eight routine conditions attached to Cork City Council’s approval of the development.
Separately, MTU has also been grated conditional planning permission for the construction of a synthetic all-weather playing pitch and four floodlighting columns at its Bishopstown campus.
Cork City Council sought some further information before making a decision on the application, including hours of intended use and information on how the pitch would be managed.
A responding letter stated that the hours of usage would be from 8am to 10pm on weekdays and 8am to 6pm on weekends, corresponding with the opening hours of the university.
The letter said the proposed pitch would be primarily used by students and staff but that it is also intended to offer the facility to clubs and other outside users when available.
The all-weather pitch will be managed and operated by the university caretakers.
Cork City Council has approved the development subject to 12 conditions, which have yet to be published.
