'He will be remembered as a gentleman': Tributes paid following the passing of Jimmy Brohan

Tributes are being paid to Jimmy Brohan, the President of the Blackrock GAA club, on his passing.

Posting on Facebook, the Blackrock National Hurling Club said: "It is with great sadness that we announce the passing of our Club President Jimmy Brohan. 

"A legend of our club both on and off the pitch and a friend and mentor to so many of us."

Cork GAA have also paid tribute saying Mr Brohan's death "removes a gentleman who has given his club and county wonderful service as a player, selector and steward".

They detailed his successes in the world of GAA: "Jimmy played his part in Blackrock’s success in the Cork County Senior championships of 1956 and 1961.

"He won a Celtic cross with Cork Senior hurlers in 1954 and was a member of the team which lost out to Wexford in 1956.

"Jimmy was a selector with the Cork Senior Hurling three in a row side of 1976, 1977 and 1978. He returned as a county selector when Cork won the All Ireland Senior final of 1986 when he saw his nephew, Tom Cashman captain the team to victory.

"Jimmy played his part in Páirc Uí Chaoimh and at county grounds around Munster as a steward and stiles.

"His beloved Blackrock honoured him with the naming of ”The Jimmy Brohan Hurling Alley” after him Jimmy was a legend of Blackrock & Cork both on and off the pitch and a friend and mentor to many."

In a post on Facebook St Michaels GAA said: "Very sad news this morning on the passing of Jimmy Brohan. Jimmy was a lifelong member of St Michaels, winning a Junior County in ‘56 and an Intermediate County in ‘69. He also represented the club at minor level with Cork.

"He will be remembered as a gentleman and a great supporter and friend to us all. He would always ask how Michaels were going, he gave us his time last year to give some inspiring words around winning and that winning mindset. We brought that to the dressing room before our County Final and rewarded him later that Sunday afternoon.

"He gave equal devotion to both the Rockies and St Michaels. For Jimmy, playing and competing was more important to winning. It gave us great pleasure, that on our great day last year, we were able to present Jimmy with that County trophy. 

"No player asked who he was, they already knew. He now joins his beloved Betty and of course his great friend Eddie Collins. Thanks for everything Jim."
