THOUSANDS of people participated in 'The Echo’ Women’s Mini-Marathon.

Despite the weather being grey and cloudy, several thousand people participated in the 42nd annual race in Cork City.

The annual Mini-Marathon commenced at 12 noon today on Kennedy Quay and it finished in Kennedy Park.
A new route was used this year due to works taking place at the Marina and the race distance also dropped from the usual 6km to 5km.

The Lord Mayor of Cork, Cllr Kieran McCarthy praised the participants for 'building' stronger communities.
"Building stronger communities brings more opportunities to talk, share, and support each other.
"And in the world we find ourselves, supporting each other matters more than ever before."
What you stand for matters more than ever before. Each one of you is like a lighthouse shining out supporting your friends, families, and your selected charities," he said.

"This marathon is everything that is great about the city," the Lord Mayor said.
"Its sense of caring, its sense of place, its sense of identity, and its sense of spirit. My hope would be that everyone who attends our marathon will come away with something: be it a positive feeling of happiness and joy, or an engagement with your fellow runners. Let’s keep connecting and let’s keep building what is great about our beautiful hearted city," he added.

The 2023 Echo Women’s Mini Marathon is the biggest event of its kind in Munster. Thousands of elated runners crossed the finish line with a cheer as they raised money for a number of worthy charities, with some even achieving a personal best race time.
